There is no one set of instructions to follow in preventing or avoiding personal attacks.   Just as there are several types of crimes which are directed at individuals, there are as many tips to avoid or lessen the degree of the attack.  Your course of action against a criminal depends on the situation you face.  Therefore, suggestions regarding personal safety are diverse.

Crime Prevention is everyone’s business – children, youth, adults and seniors must work together to protect themselves, their families, and their neighborhoods.  Whether you are 18 or 80, the best weapon against street crime is ALERTNESS & COMMON SENSE.  Stay alert and tuned into your surroundings.  Know where you are and where you are going.  Stand tall and walk with confidence. Trust your instincts.  If you feel uncomfortable about something or someone, leave quickly and call for help!

Tips for Walkers:

bullet

Keep alert and walk with your head up.  (don’t look busy and preoccupied, talking on your cell phone.)

bullet

Look at the people around you.

bullet

Choose to use busy streets and avoid vacant lots.

bullet

Stick to well lighted areas.

bullet

Don’t walk or jog alone. (take a friend or neighbor with you)

bullet

Get to know your neighborhood.  Look at store fronts, houses and know where your fire and police stations are located.

bullet

Carry personal property close to your body.

bullet

Take a cell phone with you.

Tips for Drivers:

bullet

Always lock your vehicle and take your keys.

bullet

Keep your car in good working condition.

bullet

Park in well lighted areas.

bullet

Never pick up anyone on the side of the road, you do not know.

bullet

Look inside of your car before you get in. (check the back seat)

bullet

Know where you are going. (map it out ahead of time)

bullet

If your car breaks down, move to the side of road and call for help.  If you have to leave, make sure you write a note with some contact information and call the local police.

bullet

Carry an emergency kit that may include a first aid kit, flares, and tools.

bullet

Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle!

You can also look in your neighborhood for problems that might affect your community. For example: abandoned cars, (call the police) missing street or road signs, (call the twp. garage) inoperable street lighting (call your electric company).  These are just a few ideas for people to think about before any trouble sets in.  You can also role play ahead of time some ideas in case something were to happen to you by asking yourself some “what if” questions.  By thinking about how you may react regarding a certain situation, may help when confronted with a bad situation. Be alert and be prepared, not paranoid!

If Crime Occurs – Report It!  The police need to know what criminals are doing.  This helps the police assign officers in the places where crimes are occurring or where they are most likely to occur.  If you don’t report crime, this allows the criminal to continue to operate without interferences.  We certainly appreciate the help we have received from Voorhees residents in the past.  I would like to encourage residents to continue to call us whenever you see or know that any crime occurs in Voorhees Township.
