Security alarms can detect an intrusion, summon emergency assistance or warn of hazardous conditions, if used correctly.  They are also an effective strategy for the prevention of crime, particularly burglaries, where studies have continually shown reduced crime rates after installation of an intrusion detection system.

Advantages of electronic alarm systems:

bullet

Large areas and numerous points of alarm can be monitored  by a single individual.

bullet

Installed properly, security alarm systems are extremely vigilant.  They do not require sleep, food, or breaks.  They remain available 24 hours per day if necessary to detect the targeted condition.

bullet

Security alarms are more economical than guards.

bullet

Detectors have the ability to see and detect where man cannot.  They can operate in total darkness or extreme temperatures.

bullet

The time to make a detection and generate some reaction to the event is short.  Police or other emergency units can arrive on scene minutes after the first detection of the event.

bullet

Fixing the location that triggered the event is more accurate, directing the response to a specific location.

bullet

Problems with the systems that could render the system inoperative can be quickly diagnosed and repair action initiated.

Exterior doors, windows, and skylights should be covered by all electronic alarm systems.  It is suggested that any alarm system should have an audible exterior and interior siren and should always be monitored by a reputable alarm monitoring station.  If there should ever be an activation, the police would be notified immediately.  It’s also very important that homeowners teach everyone in the household how to operate the system as operator error is the number one reason for false alarm activations.  There is a process in which to cancel an accidental alarm so every homeowner must be familiar with it, falling within the guidelines of their alarm monitoring company.

Chapter 100 of the Voorhees Township Ordinance Book describes guidelines set forth regarding the requirement for homeowners and businesses to register their alarms within Voorhees Township.  (This can be found on the Voorhees website: www.voorhees-nj.com click on “code book” then search for “alarms”)  There is also a section for listing emergency responders, in case the police need to make contact with the owners.

Warnings are issued up to the 6th false alarm activation on a yearly basis, at a residence.  Afterwards fines range from $100.00 to $300.00 for subsequent false alarm activations.  (100.6a(1) VT Code Book)

Non residential alarms are given up to the 4th false alarm activation on a yearly basis.  Afterwards the fines range from $200.00 to $500.00, not including any court costs that may be imposed with either case above.

Please do not let this stop you from using and activating your home’s alarm system every time you leave your home, even if it’s just for a few minutes.  You can never be too sure and of course it’s always better to be safe than sorry regarding the security and safety of your family and home.
