
Chief April Herrington leads the Voorhees Police Department, which is the 6th largest police department of the 37 municipalities in Camden County. She was appointed Chief on January 1, 2026, which makes her the 6th Police Chief in the Department’s 65-year history. Chief Herrington brings 23 years of law enforcement service, experience, and expertise to her post.
Chief Herrington grew up in Voorhees and is a product of the Voorhees Schools and Eastern Regional High School. She attained her Bachelor’s Degree in Law and Criminal Justice at Rowan University and her Master’s Degree in Administrative Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Chief Herrington’s career in Voorhees began in 1998 in the Township Clerk’s Office and in the Municipal Court. She was soon hired as the first Confidential Assistant in the Police Department. Chief Herrington took the Civil Service Exam and upon graduation from the Gloucester County Police Academy, she became an officer assigned to the street.
At the department, she has had the distinct opportunity of holding numerous positions and ranks from Patrol Officer, Firearms Instructor, Hostage Negotiator, Investigator, Detective, Patrol Sergeant, Detective Sergeant, Patrol Bureau Lieutenant, Criminal Investigations Bureau Lieutenant, Administrative Bureau Lieutenant, Operations Division Captain, Accreditation Manager, Deputy Chief to her current position of Chief of Police.
Chief Herrington has received specialized training in areas such as crisis and hostage negotiations, peer support and wellness training. She is a certified resiliency police officer, supervising firearms instructor and certified crisis negotiator. She served for four years on the Multi-Agency Peer Support Team, a collaborative officer support group that promotes officer wellness with three departments: Voorhees, Cherry Hill and Gloucester Township. She has also served for over ten years on the Camden County Diocese Blue Mass Committee, which organizes a mass each year to honor first responders. Since 2006, she has been an instructor at both the Camden County Police Academy and Gloucester County Police Academy.
She is a graduate of the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Command and Leadership Academy, DC Metropolitan Police Leadership Academy and the FBI Mid-Atlantic Law Enforcement Executive Development Course. She earned a Professional Certificate in Evidence Based Policing and the New Jersey State Association of Chiefs of Police Accredited Command Executive Certification Award.
